What's an SSL certificate

SSL Certificates are small data files that digitally bind a cryptographic key to an organisation's details. When installed on a web server, it activates the padlock and the HTTPS protocol and allows secure connections from a web server to a browser. Typically, SSL is used to secure credit card transactions, data transfer and logins, and more recently is becoming the norm when securing browsing of social media sites.

Why do I need one?

Since around 2018, Google, the makers of the popular browser Chrome, have penalised any site that doesn't have an SSL cert, or to use internet jargon, isn't secure.

The first thing they do is put a big red warning at the top of all sites with an SSL cert, warning the user that the site isn't secure.

More importantly, though, Google will downrank any website without an SSL cert, meaning you will not achieve good search engine results.

We don't charge for them!

Many hosting companies will charge a yearly fee for an SSL cert, often as much as £150 / €200 a year. We supply SSL certs for free with all the websites we host.

Self-hosted Websites

If you have your own server space and would like us to build you a site to host on it, no problem, we can make you a "self-contained" website.

Building a self-contained website takes a bit longer, so there is a charge, typically about £100, but once complete, we will demonstrate the site working on our server, then send you a zip file containing all the associated files for publishing yourself.

Please note: Some of our addons are not suitable for self-hosted sites. They can only be used when we host the site.

About Self-hosted sites (IMPORTANT!)

Your server must be running the latest software, including PHP, including PHP Mail, if the site contains any forms. We also strongly recommend you have an SSL cert on the server/domain too.

We will demo the new site working on our server but can not guarantee it'll work on your own. All servers are not equal! Typically, the cheap hosting companies will cut corners which may result in a loss of functionality.
